"Domain-Agnostic Accelerators: Efficiency with Programmability"

( MPI-SWS talk in Kooperation mit dem Fachbereich Informatik)

Domain-specific hardware accelerators for graphics, deep learning, image processing, and other tasks have become pervasive to meet the performance and energy-efficiency needs of emerging applications. However, such specializations are inherently at odds with the programmability long enjoyed by software developers from general-purpose processors. In this talk, I will explore the feasibility of programmable, domain-agnostic accelerators that can be morphed and instantiated to specialized accelerators at runtime through software. In particular, I will present Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Array (CGRA) as a promising approach to offer high accelerator efficiency while supporting diverse tasks through compile-time configurability. The central challenge is efficient spatio-temporal mapping of the applications expressed in high-level programming languages with complex data dependencies, control flow, and memory accesses to the accelerator. We approach this challenge through a synergistic hardware-software co-designed approach with (a) innovations at the architecture level to improve the efficiency of the application execution as well as ease the burden on the compilation, and (b) innovations at the compiler level to fully exploit the architectural optimizations for quality and fast mapping. Finally, I will share systems-level considerations for real-world deployment of domain-agnostic accelerators in the context of edge computing.
